Our Mission and What We Do

February 29th, 2008

The New York State English Council has formed the Standing Committee on Teacher Inquiry to support ELA teachers of all levels across the state in conducting teacher inquiry studies in their classrooms and in disseminating this research to a wider audience. The committee seeks to provide classroom teachers with the resources necessary to conduct teacher inquiry studies that can serve as effective professional development, as a strategy for increasing student achievement, and as a productive means for educational policy advocacy.
The Standing Committee on Teacher Inquiry provides support to New York State ELA teachers. Teacher researchers cannot stand alone; they need the support of many people, especially peers.

NYSEC Mini-Grants

Each year, NYSEC awards mini-grants to NYS ELA teachers. Teacher researchers are strongly encouraged to apply for these grants to assist them in their classroom inquiry projects. For more information, visit the NYSEC web site: http://www.nysecteach.org.

The Record

NYSEC’s journal The Record is committed to publishing teacher research studies. Find articles about teacher inquiry and issues important to the teacher inquiry field. Please submit your teacher research studies to be considered for publication.

Teacher Research Mentors

The Standing Committee on Teacher Inquiry recruits and trains teacher research mentors who are on-call to assist New York ELA teachers to conduct and disseminate teacher research studies.

Annual NYSEC Conference Teacher Inquiry Strand

Beginning in 2007, NYSEC’s popular annual conference will feature a Teacher Inquiry Strand to highlight workshops and presentations that feature teacher research— both how to do teacher research, as well as sharing the results of a teacher research study.
