The New York State English Council has made generous donations to other NCTE affiliates in support of students impacted by natural disasters.
NYSEC’s tradition of giving dates back to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when NYSEC presented a check to the Louisiana Council of Teachers of English at NCTE. NYSEC has been able to resume that practice in the last few years, donating to Florida and Texas in 2017 and Hawaii, North Carolina, and South Carolina in 2018.
“Through hard work and good fortune, NYSEC is currently doing well financially and believes in giving back, whether to New York State schools and teachers through awards, mini-grants, and scholarships or to our fellow affiliates throughout the country,” explained NYSEC’s NCTE Liaison Larry Butti.
All NYSEC donations are voted on by the NYSEC Executive Board.

From Stacey: “HCTE would like to thank the New York State English Council for its generous donation to HCTE to help students in Hawaii schools impacted by the 2018 natural disasters including Hurricanes Hector and Lane, and the Kilauea Volcano eruption which destroyed many homes on the Big Island.”
